Inside the Airplane Cabin Room: Macau Sauna, East Castle Spa

You sit down in a cream airline seat, high-backed, with a wide armrest, and to your right runs a row of oval windows lit blue. Above you the ceiling curves the way a cabin’s does. In front of you is a white table. There is no boarding pass, no announcement, nobody asking you to stow anything. Outside the door is a hotel corridor on the third floor, and you are in Macau.

This is one of the twenty-odd scenario theme rooms at East Castle Spa. We have listed their names many times, the prison, the interrogation room, the classroom, the hospital, the ambulance, the gym, the coach, the restaurant, the office, the golf range, the boxing ring, the car wash, and this is the first time we walk into one and write it down. A guest asked us this week what the airplane cabin actually looks like inside. Twenty-odd rooms is a rare number for a Macau sauna, so we start with the one that feels furthest from home.

What is in the cabin

Windows, seats and overhead lockers are the bones of a cabin. Look further in: a white console sits between the two seats, and along the wall beyond the table runs an L-shaped sofa in navy-and-white panelled leather with silver cushions. One screen hangs above the sofa, another on the left wall, both on, both blue. By the door stands a trolley with cups and bottles on its top shelf.

The clock starts the moment the therapist appears at the door. The full-body massage course you chose from the price board, 60 or 90 minutes, happens right here beside that seat, the window still at your right hand, the light still blue. However long you spent in the jacuzzi hall or at the dining table before that is your own time and is not counted. The cabin carries no separate room charge; the room is inside the course, and the courses are listed on the prices page.

You can name it; we cannot lock it

A second guest asked us to hold the cabin for a Saturday night. We did not agree. The way it works at East Castle Spa is that you name the theme you want when you book and our staff note it; which rooms are open on the night is decided on the floor. If the cabin is in use, staff will tell you on the spot which rooms are free. The theme rooms page and the gallery show each one.

When you can get in

The door is open 24 hours. Therapists are on duty from 15:00 to 06:00 the next morning, and the cabin runs on the therapists’ clock, so arrive inside those hours for the massage and the room. Arrive early and the baths and the free sleeping zone are yours before 15:00.

How to book it

Book through this site with your date, roughly when you arrive, your hotel, and one more line: the airplane cabin. A private car meets you at the airport, the ferry terminal or your hotel and stops at the door of Casa Real Hotel; the spa is on the 3rd floor. Your bag goes into a locker, the one free add-on is chosen on site, and anything else you want to know, ask us first; the consultation is free.

Can I ask for the airplane cabin in advance?

You can name it; we cannot lock it. Tell us when you book and staff note it; on the night it depends on what is open, and you will hear which other rooms are free.
